Delivery app Wolt’s expansion in Luxembourg has progressed faster than expected, with the average basket being 26% higher than in other similar markets. This has led to the company rolling out its delivery subscription service earlier than planned.

The company’s launch in February was always going to be felt in Luxembourg, considering Wolt’s experience operating in 25 countries. But the Finnish company’s expansion has progressed faster, so much so that it is launching its delivery subscription service Wolt+ ahead of schedule. Typically, this step, referred to as “the Netflix of home delivery”, arrives several months after the firm expands to a new country. The subscribers are offered free delivery for a flat fee of €9.99 per month. This sum is less than the cost of three standard deliveries per month, says Wolt.

“Since the launch, we’ve observed a 100% growth from March to May, and thousands of people have already downloaded the app. It’s an amazing achievement given the size of the city,” comments Ludvig Helmertz, interim general manager of Wolt Luxemburg.

“Traditionally, the way we start is delivery of restaurant food. But in the end, we want to build a shopping mall in your pocket”

The average basket value in the grand duchy is 26% higher than in other similar markets, estimates the company, and the app has been downloaded over 12,000 times since February. During the first stage of its expansion in the grand duchy, Wolt began by delivering only to Luxembourg City. But the company has increased its range and now fulfils orders for Strassen, Bertrange, Hesperange and Beggen.

The next step in Wolt’s evolution will be widening the scope of their offering. As is the case in other countries, customers will be able to order their groceries or pet food, for example. The company already offers flower delivery and works with online grocery store U Market. But this is just the beginning, as Henrik Pankakoski, Regional General Manager, North at Wolt, told Silicon Luxembourg back in February.

“Traditionally, the way we start is delivery of restaurant food. But in the end, we want to build a shopping mall in your pocket,” concludes Henrik Pankakoski, Regional General Manager, North at Wolt.
