Fondation de Luxembourg has engaged over €360m in philanthropy, supporting projects in poverty reduction, social cohesion, health, and education. In 2023, despite global tensions, they distributed nearly €85m to general interest projects.

For over 15 years, the Fondation de Luxembourg has nurtured a personalised approach to philanthropy, guiding donors through their philanthropic journeys and translating their passions into public benefits.

This commitment has resulted in over €360m engaged in philanthropic efforts, supporting charitable projects across five major themes: poverty reduction and social cohesion, culture and diversity, health and research, biodiversity and climate change, and universal education. Through their initiatives, there has been a 24% increase in support dedicated to poverty reduction.

To date, nearly €85m have been distributed to general interest projects and €10m to charitable projects. In 2023 alone, amid rising global geopolitical tensions, significant progress highlighted the impact of their structured philanthropy.

Today, the Foundation de Luxembourg works alongside 112 foundations under their aegis and supports a variety of causes. Each foundation created over these past fifteen years has its own story and agenda.

Innovative educational initiatives

Education remains a cornerstone of the Fondation de Luxembourg’s mission. Post-pandemic, childhood learning is regaining momentum with innovative programs like the mentorship initiative supported by the Peter und Barbara Bittmann Stiftung, which helps children discover new perspectives.

Similarly, the Fondation Lily & Francy’s project encourages adolescents to engage with nature, promoting outdoor learning experiences. In regions with limited educational access, such as Tanzania and Senegal, foundations like Majany and Jeankerber are making significant strides in providing quality education and reviving sustainable building techniques for schools.

Addressing climate change

When the urgency of climate change was underscored in 2023, the warmest year on record, Fondation de Luxembourg took proactive measures to support solutions to this crisis. The Fondation Enovos, for instance, has backed researchers in optimising electric car charging to balance electricity supply and demand.

Meanwhile, the Fondation Philanthropia Europe’s campaign in France is transforming destructive fishing practices to protect ocean biospheres. These initiatives exemplify the foundation’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Fostering international collaboration

The Fondation de Luxembourg has also been instrumental in fostering international cooperation in scientific computing through strategic partnerships. A notable collaboration with the Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC) aims to advance high-performance computing (HPC) applications, driving significant advancements in research and innovation.

To promote philanthropy further, the foundation organised events with senior wealth advisers and family foundations, emphasising the transmission of philanthropic values across generations. Collaborations with the financial sector, private banks, and educational institutions have also been pivotal in spreading the ethos of philanthropy.

In 2024, the Fondation de Luxembourg will celebrate its 15th anniversary, marking a decade and a half of impactful philanthropic work. The foundation plans to launch a climate initiative that connects corporate donors with impactful local projects, addressing the philanthropic funding gap for climate change.

Additionally, the recently approved law for foundations and associations in Luxembourg promises to strengthen foundation governance and open new avenues for philanthropic funding.

As the Fondation de Luxembourg prepares for the future, it remains steadfast in its mission to improve well-being and promote human values of tolerance and respect.

With the unwavering dedication of its donors, the foundation continues to contribute to a more harmonious and equitable society, navigating the challenges of today with optimism and hope for a brighter future.
